BERKELEY XRF SAMPLE SUBMISSION FORM

CAUTION ON SHIPPING: The University of California mail services recently lost a certified mail package sent from New Mexico.  It never arrived at my mail box.  We strongly advise shipping artifacts by FedEx or UPS, both of which deliver directly to our office.  Certified mail is signed by the driver picking up mail at the Berkeley main post office, not by us, so we have no way of tracking the package.  If you still want to use USPS, we suggest insuring it for a large amount, and send it to the off-campus P.O. Box.

SITE LOCATION INFORMATION

It is quite important that the site location, chronology, and any other pertinent information be submitted in order to properly assign the artifacts to source. If source samples are being submitted for analysis, please include as precise provenience information as possible including, but not limited to: State, county, USGS Quad, Range and Township, UTM coordinates, and the geological environment including probable secondary deposits, alluvial samples, samples from lava (bedrock). Please submit a general location map for both sites and sources.

SAMPLE PREPARATION AND SELECTION

Samples should be washed and be as clean as possible. Extremely dirty samples may be returned for cleaning, since we are not prepared to clean the samples in most cases. Samples should be individually bagged and NOT numbered on the artifact. One artifact per bag or we charge $.05 per bag for each bag we supply.  The optimal sample size is 10 mm in smallest diameter and 3 mm thick, but samples as small as 7mm in smallest diameter and 1mm thick can be analyzed without significant error in most regions. Call or e-mail if you have a question.

PER SAMPLE RATES:

Number of obsidian samples for XRF analysis ($55.00 minimum charge): ____________ X $sample size = ___________
